An 18-year-old Milpitas man has been identified as the person who died Wednesday afternoon in a solo-vehicle accident east of Milpitas.

Michael Martinez was a passenger in a white Mazda Miata that flipped over in unincorporated Santa Clara County just before 2 p.m.

Nickolas Piazza of Milpitas was driving and lost control of the vehicle during a left curve on Felter Road just south of Calaveras Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The vehicle struck an embankment and overturned, coming to a rest on its roof in the westbound lane, CHP Officer Todd Thibodeau said Wednesday.

Martinez struck his head on the pavement and died at the scene, according to the CHP. Piazza was transported to San Jose Medical Center for minor injuries.

The CHP said alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash, but speed may have been a cause.

The person named in that article was a co-worker of mine. He was only 18. I received the txt message of his death yesterday. He was a really cool laid back person. One of the few people who I actually thought was cool at work. I still can't believe someone so young can go so early. He will be greatly missed.
